Towards tools for detecting pollution in soil and water?

This is the subject of the poster we presented at the Palais des Congrès in Liège, during the AquaConSoil conference.

The MicroSense project aims to identify microbial indicators of pollution in soil (CRA-W) / water (Cebedeau) matrices and develop field tools for rapid and accurate detection of pollutants.

How do we approach the water part?

By exposing activated sludge from wastewater treatment plants to various micro- and macropollutants for 6 weeks, then analyzing their bacterial community via 16S metabarcoding and metagenomics.

What's next?

Complementary tools are currently being developed, at CEBEDEAU for the water part and at CRA-W for the soil part, to create a complete toolbox for environmental monitoring.
